چکیده

The reactions of anti-I cold-agglutinin antibodies with the red cells from normal adults (adult-I) and adult-i donors and from newborn infants have been investigated by the use of the C’la Fixation and Transfer Test of Borsos and Rapp. Ag. glutination and high concentration of serum reduce the amounts of the C’la fixation by these antibodies. Inhibition by serum is due to an inhibitor of C’la. A single molecule of antibody is required for the fixation of one molecule of C’la to either adult or cord cells. There was great variability in the amount of anti-I antibody and C’la fixed by different adult cells and by different cord cells. Although the two ranges overlapped considerably, the amount of antibody fixed by cord cells was somewhat less than that fixed by adult cells. The difference between cord cells or “lowreactivity” adult-I cells and “high-reactivity” adult-I cells is not due to the presence of different or extra antigens on the latter since cord and “low-reactivity” adult I cells are able to absorb all antibody from the antiserum which reacts with “high-reactivity” adult-I cells. The difference between adult-I and cord cells (or adult-i cells) was reduced by pretreatment of the cells with papain and was increased by increasing the temperature at which the reactions were

Prevalence and Haemolytic Significance of Red Cell Antibodies among Dangerous Universal Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital in South India

Background and Aims: A subgroup of group O individuals called ‘dangerous universal donors’ have immune (IgG) anti A and anti B antibodies which are active at 37˚C and capable of reacting with the red cells and causing lysis. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of dangerous O group among the voluntary donor population and to assess the relation between the degree of haemolysis and t...

Red Blood Cells Alloimmunization and Autoimmunization in Multi-transfused Thalassemia Patients in South of Iran

Background: Recurrent blood transfusion is a common treatment in patients with thalassemia. The development of antibodies against red blood cell (RBC) antigens complicates RBC cross-matching, enhances the in vivo destruction of transfused cells, accelerates tissue iron overloading, delays the provision of safe transfusion, and reduces health-related quality of life. Materials and Methods: In t...
